Last night I attended my first rehearsal for the Easter festival in Cianciana – Easter, or Pasqua, is like a beating heart to this community and this play is taken very seriously.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Why am I, this English woman with very little Italian, attending? To learn and practice Italian. To be part of the community I have committed the remainder of my days. To help with the skills I have. To be inside what I witnessed last Easter. It made a huge impact on me last year and I knew that somehow, for some reason, I had to be a part of it, not just watching this time around.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

They spoke to me and no translation was required. I speak English. They, on the whole, do not. They speak Italian. I know so little still. They are kindly offering translation support where and when they can, but I knew that last night there was no need. This first read through was important to me as I knew I would ‘feel’ the words. I felt them last year for the first time and I knew there would be no problem this time round.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Great acting means you don’t need to know what they are saying. It’s like an Italian opera… you don’t need to understand all the details because you will feel what is happening from the joy and the passion, the anger and the love, the empathy and the heart they give their words and the music. That is no different here in the Easter play in Cianciana.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This is theatre. This is expression. This is performance. This all stirs something inside me that I have not felt in many years. And it is all in a language that I am still learning, but I get it. I know it. I understand it. I think that is testament to the words I am hearing being spoken.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Last night was the priests rehearsal and the scene where they are discussing this man who calls himself the Messiah. Some for. Some against. But we all know where this story ends… It was local men sat around a table with highlighted scripts, men who have read the words, semi learnt the words and can give them with passion and expression. If this is how it sounds on the first reading, imagine the performance in April !<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ieri sera ho partecipato alla mia prima prova per il festa di Pasqua a Cianciana – La Pasqua, \u00e8 come un cuore pulsante per questa comunit\u00e0 e questo spettacolo \u00e8 preso molto sul serio.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Perch\u00e9 io, questa donna inglese con pochissimo italiano, partecipo? Per imparare e praticare l’italiano. Per far parte della comunit\u00e0 ho impegnato il resto dei miei giorni. Per aiutare con le competenze che ho. Per essere dentro quello che ho visto la scorsa Pasqua. Ha avuto un enorme impatto su di me l’anno scorso e sapevo che in qualche modo, per qualche ragione, dovevo farne parte, non solo guardare questa volta. Loro parlano anche a me e non \u00e8 richiesta alcuna traduzione.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Parlo inglese. Loro, nel complesso, no. Parlano italiano. So ancora cos\u00ec poco. Sono molto gentili nell’offrire aiuto nella traduzione dove e quando posso, ma sapevo che ieri sera non ce ne sarebbe state bisogno. Questa prima prova era importante per me perch\u00e9 sapevo che avrei ‘sentito’ le parole. Le ho sentite l’anno scorso per la prima volta e sapevo che non ci sarebbero stati problemi questa volta.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Recitare bene significa che non devi sapere cosa dicono. \u00c8 come un’opera italiana… non c’\u00e8 bisogno di capire tutti i dettagli perch\u00e9 si sente quello che sta accadendo dalla gioia e la passione, la rabbia e l’amore, l’empatia e il cuore che danno le loro parole e la musica. Questo non \u00e8 diverso qui nella rappresentazione di Pasqua a Cianciana.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Questo \u00e8 teatro. Questa \u00e8 espressione. Questa \u00e8 rappresentazione. Tutto questo suscita dentro di me qualcosa che non sentivo da molti anni. Ed \u00e8 tutto in una lingua che sto ancora imparando, ma la capisco. La conosco. Credo che ci\u00f2 sia una testimonianza delle parole che sento pronunciare.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Ieri sera ci sono state le prove dei sacerdoti e la scena in cui si discute di quest’uomo che si fa chiamare il Messia. Alcuni pro. Alcuni contro. Ma sappiamo tutti dove finisce questa storia… Erano uomini del posto, seduti intorno a un tavolo con scritti evidenziati, uomini che hanno letto le parole, le hanno un po\u2019 imparate e possono dare loro passione ed espressione. Se questo \u00e8 come suona la prima prova, immaginate lo spettacolo di aprile !<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
